Necessary Questions: Instructional Design for Long Term English Learners.
Since the rise of the popularity of the long-term English learner label, pervasive myths about this population have been spread. These myths about adolescent youth, many of whom are racialized bilinguals, rely primarily on standardized test scores, reflect monolingual bias, and are characterized by racial stereotypes. These myths erase youths’ abilities and constrain classroom practice. In this keynote, Dr. Brooks provides an alternative pathway towards designing instruction that highlights systemic changes necessary to create effective instructional programs.
